Abstract:
In the Tianjin dialect, casual utterance of familiar trisyllabic
sequences often induces deletion of phonological segments.
As Tianjin is also rich in tone sandhi, such Casual Speech
Elision (CSE) would interact with tone sandhi. This paper
begins with an introduction to the tone sandhi patterns
before moving on to how CSE can be captured on the basis
of deriving the Tianjin syllable structure through constraints
that associates melodic/gestural content to skeletal units
to moras. Further, moras are assumed to be tone-bearing
units, consequently, moras are the interface between tones
and segments. Thus any impact on the mora would also bring
about repercussions to both the segments and the tones.
