On Monday 20 October at 2pm, Donka Farkas (UCSC; http://people.ucsc.edu/~farkas/
  ) will give a colloquium in the UCSD Linguistics Department, in AP&M
4301.

:: Abstract ::

Assertions, polar questions and polarity particles

Donka Farkas
UCSC

My aim is to account for the systematic partial overlap in reactions
to assertions and polar questions. The first part of the talk
characterizes assertions and polar questions acts against a particular
view of context structure that allows us to see what they have in
common as well as what distinguishes them. The second part builds on
the first to provide an account of the distribution of three polarity
particles in Romanian.
