The UCSD Department of Cognitive Science is pleased to announce a talk by
Douglas A. Nitz Ph.D.
Senior Fellow in Experimental Neurobiology
Clayson Fellow, The Neurosciences Institute
Monday, February 11, 2008 at 12pm
Cognitive Science Building, room 003
"Spatial cognition and the generalization of experience "
At the very core of our ability to interact in the environment is our
perception of spatial relationships. Spatial cognition is distributed
across several brain regions and takes on multiple forms which can be
defined by their frames of reference. In this talk, the presentation of
experimental work will contrast the allocentric or 'world-centered' mapping
of spatial position observed for hippocampal neurons with the
'route-centered' mapping of position observed in parietal cortex. In
considering spatial activity patterns for each of these structures, special
attention will be given to pattern overlap as it occurs across behavioral
and environmental contexts. The potential impact of such overlap on the
organization of episodic memory and behavioral sequences will be discussed.
