Hi everyone,
I wrote to all of you a while back about the possibility of a Southern
California Workshop on Phonetics/Phonology at Pomona College on Saturday,
November 1, and I'm pleased to let you know that based on the number of
positive responses to that email, we're going to go ahead and have the
workshop that day.
I did hear from a few people who had a conflict with that date. Since my
original email, I have been informed that the Boston University Conference
on Language Development is that weekend, as well as the Arizona
linguistics workshop. However, the number of people with conflicts is
small relative to the number of positive responses, and given the other
known conflicts with possible alternative dates, I decided that we should
stick to the original date since I am doubtful that we could find another
date that would work for as many people. I apologize to those who will be
unable to make it, and I suggest that whoever organizes SCOPHO next year
should try to avoid a conflict with BUCLD so that we don't systematically
exclude people who work on language development.
So far, I have positive responses from the following institutions: USC,
UCLA, UCSB, CSU San Marcos, CSU Northridge, San Diego State, CSU
Bakersfield, CSU Long Beach (and, of course, Pomona College). UCSD is also
interested, although that is one of the places where there were concerns
about the date, so I'm not sure how many representatives they will send.
Assuming UCSD is in, that makes 10 institutions. I have been thinking
about the following tentative schedule, with 30 minute talks and 10
minutes for questions:
10:00-10:30 coffee/snacks
10:30-11:10 talk
11:10-11:50 talk
11:50-12:30 talk
12:30-1:30 lunch (provided on-site)
1:30-2:10 talk
2:10-2:50 talk
2:50-3:30 talk
3:30-4:00 coffee/snacks
4:00-4:40 talk
4:40-5:20 talk
5:20-6:00 talk
6:00 adjourn
Based on this schedule, there would be 9 slots for talks, which would work
out to one talk per institution (Pomona won't have any talks, since I'll
have my hands full with organizing and there aren't currently any
phonology students ready to give a talk). There may also be other
institutions that don't want to give talks this year, in which case we can
allocate their slots to other schools with more people wanting to talk. I
am perfectly willing to adjust the schedule to allow for multiple talks
from some of the larger departments, so please let me know your thoughts
on the schedule. We could shorten the talks and/or question periods, or we
could go later into the evening. We could also start a little earlier,
though I do want to be sensitive to people driving in from far away. Or we
could think about having an afternoon poster session, if there is
interest, to accommodate more presentations. I would appreciate feedback
on this (but please respond just to me, rather than replying to all, so
that we don't fill up everyone's inbox with these discussions).
Closer to the date of the workshop, I plan to put up a website with
information on how to get here and where to park, a program, some dinner
options, and lodging information for anyone who might wish to spend the
night. I'll send another email to let you know the address for that
website once it's up. In the mean time, please put November 1 on your
calendar as the official date for the workshop, and please notify your
colleagues of the date. We don't currently have an email list for all of
the phonologists in the area, so I will rely on each of you to spread the
word to interested people in your department.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all in November!
Best,
Mary
