Abstract:
Analysis of a case of Compensatory Lengthening (CL) in Komi
Izma (KI) using Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains
(OT-CC) (McCarthy 2007) produces results unobtainable in
'classic' OT (Prince and Smolensky 1993/2004), while leading
to the novel typological prediction that languages with
CL of the KI-type have shared-mora representations of heavy
syllables. Taken in conjunction with Broselow et. al. (1997),
who show that this representation can have specific phonetic
consequences, the OT-CC approach to CL provides a formal
solution to a long-standing problem while tying CL alternations
to an aspect of syllable structure that can be tested instrumenta
lly.
