Abstract:
This paper takes a fresh look at the representation of lexical
accent in Modern Greek. It is argued that this phenomenon
can be succesfully understood in an OT model which combines
the properties of Containment theory (Prince and Smolensky
1993, Van Oostendorp 2006) with those of Turbidity theory
(Goldrick 2000). It is shown that this model unifies the
representation of pre/post-accenting morphemes, it accounts
for accent migration and locality phenomena and makes accurate
typological predictions about the cross-linguistic distribution
of accentual patterns. Moreover, we argue that it offers
a restrictive theory of the morphology-phonology interface
and, especially, the formulation of constraints that control
the mapping between morphological structure and prosodic form.
