Two squibs on opacity and globality

Abstract:
Squib #1: Cross-derivational feeding, globality, and opacity
(14 pp.)
I argue in this squib that there exists a class of underlying-to-
surface mapping patterns that present novel problems for
classical rule-ordering theory as developed in SPE and its
descendants. Furthermore, I demonstrate that a plausible
solution to these problems essentially amounts to the equivalent
of candidate comparison (and constraint ranking) as understood
in OT.
Squib #2: A note on overapplication opacity (10 pp.)
In this note I show that counterbleeding process interaction
is just one of several types of overapplication opacity,
some of which are amenable to analysis in standard OT and
some of which are not. In one type of example (cross-derivational
feeding, as discussed in more detail in Squib #1), OT has
no problem at all and it is SPE that must be significantly
altered.
