Local Conjunction and Comparative Markedness

Abstract:
This article extends the applicability of local conjunction of 
markedness and faithfulness (Ito & Mester 2002, Lubowicz 2002) beyond 
derived environment effects. It is shown that local conjunction of 
markedness and anti-faithfulness (Alderete 2001) can also account for 
chain shift mappings. In addition, it is argued that local conjunction 
can distinguish between different sources for a given markedness 
violation. A comparison with comparative markedness (McCarthy 2003) is 
provided.
