Dear Optimal-list colleagues,
The following is a slight revision of a recent announcement on the Linguist
List a few months ago. I post this announcement on this list not because of
a bias either for or against OT. We are particularly eager to find a
colleague that can teach basic theoretical phonology (and semantics if
possible). In addition, expertise in tonal phonology would be particularly
desirable. At the end of this message, I explain some of the details.
BEGIN ANNOUNCEMENT
National Chi Nan University's Foreign Language and Literature
Department has an opening available for a linguist specializing in
phonology or semantics. The Department is located in a scenic area
of central Taiwan, and has a diverse, multinational faculty. The
Department currently offers undergraduate and M.A. programs in
English literature, an undergraduate concentration in linguistics,
and an M.A. program in theoretical linguistics. Linguistics-faculty
specializations include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonology,
language learnability and acquisition, and language and mind.
The Department will consider applications for the fall semester of
2004. Applicants should have the Ph.D. by July 2004; the contract
begins August 1st, with classes beginning in mid September. Starting
rank at the university is assistant professor, but senior applicants
with significant qualifications beyond the Ph.D. will be considered
for higher rank and are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be required to (a) conduct and publish
scholarly research, (b) supervise M.A. thesis research, (c) teach
linguistics courses at undergraduate/M.A. levels, and (d) teach
undergraduate service courses such as English composition.
In addition to specialists in phonology and semantics, the Department
is interested in linguists able to supervise research on topics in
Sinitic languages. Competence in spoken and written Chinese is
therefore highly desirable.
Materials required in the application include the following:
1) current resume,
2) three letters of recommendation,
3) Ph.D. dissertation and representative publications,
4) photocopy of degree (if already granted),
5) graduate school transcripts,
6) certification of employment (if currently holding a position), and
7) any other relevant documents.
For details, please consult the official announcement, posted in
Chinese only at <http://web.ncnu.edu.tw/ncnu/ann/20030307hire3.htm>.
(This web site also advertises an open position in literature.)

END ANNOUNCEMENT
Allow me to explain a few of details that may be unfamiliar to those outside
the Taiwan system. First, "certification of employment (if currently holding
a position)" is relevant if one wishes to have any current or prior
post-Ph.D. employment to count toward appointment as a rank higher than
assistant professor. Such experience, of course, would also be used for
selecting the most qualified applicant. Next, "photocopy of degree (if
already granted)" and "graduate school transcripts" appear to be redundant.
A photocopy of the Ph.D. diploma is often required here. The transcript can,
in the first, instance be a photocopy; if the application progresses to the
shortlist stage, an official transcript will be requested. We also welcome
electronic attachments of application materials, although hard copies may be
requested by the Search Committee. The contact person is Robert Reynolds,
who heads the Search Committee, and I am also a member, as is Anjum Saleemi.
I would be willing to answer informal inquiries as well. Best, --Loren
