Positional markedness as a by-product of the learning situation

Abstract:
This paper presents a simulation where a “learner” attempts
to acquire a positionally unrestricted phonological contrast
(plain vs. palatalized labial stops)without any a priori
knowledge of the relevant positional hierarchies. The results
show that a learning model that includes human-like perceptual
limitations can give rise to cross-linguistically attested
positional markedness patterns without positing this a priori
knowledge.
