Our main thesis is that partially ordered optimality-theoretic grammars allow us to relate four apparently independent empirical phenomena: (i) categorical grammaticality contrasts; (ii) variation and preferences in expression; (iii) ambiguity and preferences in interpretation; (iv) lexical organization. We make the following proposals: (i) the morpheme 'already' encodes the meaning of two contrasting phases; (ii) several types of event structures, including that of the Perfect, also encode a similar meaning of contrasting phases, but with particular orderings of phases specified. If in addition we assume Optimality Theory with partial ordering, we derive a range of expressions of a given aspectual meaning that is cross-linguistically supported, and show that 'already' emerges as an unmarked aspectual operator in Colloquial Singapore English. I present empirical evidence showing that in such systems, the 'desirability' of an unstressed vowel is predicted by its sonority: high sonority unstressed vowels like [a] are considered worse than medium sonority unstressed vowels (like [e]). I present an OT analysis using prominence-alignment constraints similar to those employed by Kenstowicz (1994) for sonority-driven stress. In this paper, it is argued that, in spite of these domain effects, which would suggest the need for a serial analysis, all the facts concerning epenthesis and consonant deletion can be accounted for in a parallel optimality-theoretic approach. The differences in behavior are the consequence of the different ranking of morphological Alignment constraints with respect to other constraints and an Alignment constraint that makes reference to subsyllabic constituents. It shows that Stratal OT supports a learning model that accounts for the acquisition of opaque grammars with a minimum of machinery. The model is illustrated with a case study of the classical counterbleeding interaction between Diphthong Raising and Flapping in Canadian English. Accounts on this constraint treat it as one of the fundamental among phonological phenomena. However trivial the formulation of CODA-COND might appear to be at first sight, a deeper scrutiny of the various analyses of languages in which the constraint is in force often unveils aspects that have been assumed to be unproblematic. This paper will present a close look at the various formulations of CODA-COND and will explain the structure of the syllable in Acehnese using a constraint-base d framework following Optimality Theory. In particular we will show that an optimality-theoretic alignment approach faces both empirical and theoretical problems. It fails to offer an adequate characterization of the Acehnese data. It also misses the generalization that onset place features are preserved and spread in assimilation contexts. The material covered is weighted in favor of a positional-faithfulness-based analysis.
