L'opération 'Phonologie' de l'Equipe de Recherche en Syntaxe et Sémantique ERSS (CNRS & Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail) organise à Toulouse, en association avec le GDR 1954 Phonologie du CNRS, un colloque international sur le thème 'Des représentations aux contraintes' du 7 au 11 juillet 2003. Coordinatrice: Elsa Gomez-Imbert.

The phonology team of the Equipe de Recherche en Syntaxe et Sémantique (CNRS & Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail) will organise in Toulouse, in partnership with the GDR 1954 Phonologie du CNRS, an international conference on the theme 'From representations to constraints'. Coordinator: Elsa Gomez-Imbert.

Ce colloque se donne pour but d'explorer, d'une part, les concepts de rection et de spécification, d'autre part le lien entre les théories de contraintes et la nature des représentations phonologiques. La plupart des cadres phonologiques utilisent la notion de tête à l'intérieur de domaines donnés et, même si ce concept de base semble transparent, on peut néanmoins s'interroger sur son homogénéité de domaine à domaine : par exemple, dans les constituants syllabiques, les structures rythmiques et au niveau infrasegmental. Intimement liée à cette question est celle de la spécification des éléments phonologiques et du rôle joué par la notion d'opposition dans la constitution des représentations phonologiques. Bien que les contraintes apparaissent tôt dans les théories phonologiques - opérant sur les représentations sous-jacentes et sur les formes de surface - une théorie à base de contraintes comme la théorie de l'optimalité, telle qu'elle a été créée, n'est pas une théorie des!
 représentations. Puisque ces questions se reposent actuellement dans différentes théories à base de contraintes, l'un des buts principaux du colloque est d'examiner la place des représentations dans ces théories à contraintes : émergent-elles des contraintes ou faut-il au contraire leur donner une place centrale au sein de la théorie phonologique ? Et si oui, quelle forme faut-il leur donner ?


The aim of this conference is to explore, on the one hand, the nature of concepts such as headhood, contrast and specification in phonology and, on the other, the part played by representations in constraint-based phonologies. Most phonological frameworks appeal to the notion of head within phonological domains and, while this notion may seem transparent, one can nevertheless wonder about its homogeneity from domain to domain: for example within syllabic constituents, stress groups and infrasegmental structure. Closely linked to this question is that of the specification of 
phonological elements and the role played by contrast in the establishment of phonological structure. While the role of constraints within phonological theories is now well supported, various constraint based theories such as Optimality Theory are not theories of representations. Nevertheless, representational questions continue to pose problems. Do they emerge from constraints or do they need to be given a central place within phonological theory ? And if so, how can their form be specified ? These are some of the questions which will be addressed within the conference.

Sont prévues quarante communications de cinquante minutes chacune (discussion comprise), des séances de posters et une table ronde pour chacune des parties.  Vingt des communications se feront sur invitation, vingt sont ouvertes aux réponses données à cet appel. Veuillez envoyer un résumé anonyme de 400 mots maximum, spécifiant si vous voulez présenter une communication et/ou un présentation en poster.

The whole conference will be made up of 40 papers of 50 mn each (including discussion time), poster sessions and a round table for each part of the conference. Twenty of the papers will be by invitation, and twenty papers will be selected by the scientific committee on the basis of the abstracts. Please send an anonymised summary of 400 words maximum, specifying whether you wish to be considered for a paper and/or a poster presentation.
