ABSTRACT:
Linguists (including me) have been convinced that the cognitive
representations of language are efficient and rely on a low bitrate code.
Most linguists assume that language employs an abstract, seaker-independent,
rate-independent, and fairly context-independent cognitive notation system,
such as is provided by segmental phonetic or phonological features.
However, experimental evidence on memory for speech unambiguously supports a
far richer representation that includes massive detail -- even about a
speaker's voice -- using the kind of memory called episodic memory or
exemplar memory. If linguistic memory works like this, then we must
reconsider what the true role of those intuitively powerful and abstract
segmental representations may be.
