CogSci room 003

Title: Wernicke's Aphasia: What It Is and What It's Not

Summary: This presentation is the second in a series of talks on aphasia, a
disorder of language due to injury to the brain. This presentation will
concern Wernicke's aphasia, the type of aphasia that affects the
lexical-semantic system without affecting motor speech production. An
individual with Wernicke's aphasia has kindly agreed to be interviewed in
front of the audience, and will teach us, first-hand, about the effects of
brain injury on the language system. This interview will be followed by a
lecture on Wernicke's aphasia as well as its relationship to Wernicke's area
of the brain. In addition, Wernicke's aphasia will be discussed in relation
to semantic dementia, a neurodegenerative disorder that is often confused
with Wernicke's aphasia.

No prior knowledge about aphasia is required. All are welcome, from novices
to aphasiologists.

Refreshments will be provided.
