Hi everyone,

FYI: CoNLL is one of the leading conferences in NLP. It's a good place
to submit work of either a purely engineering nature or work with a
somewhat cognitive-science bent (especially as regards language
acquisition). The deadline is the end of April so any of you who wind
up with a good final project and are ambitious might wind up in a
position to consider the possibility of extending the project into a
CoNLL submission.

One interesting thing about CoNLL is that every year it has a "shared
task", with a clearly defined dataset, inference task, and evaluation
metric. You can register to participate and will be provided datasets.
Participation involves building a system, submitting it to the
evaluation, and submitting a paper. This year, the timeline is
particularly good for our class: the trial dataset will be distributed
February 25, the full training & development datasets will be
distributed March 10, and submission of test runs & papers are due in
late to mid May. This shared task is a perfectly good (and rather
interesting) topic for a class final project. You need to register by
February 20 to participate. Take a look at the task description here:

and if it interests you, consider registering (and talk to me about it!).

Roger
